Early Literacy & Reading

Pediatric Speech Therapy Associates is excited to offer children in the Denver area the opportunity to get ahead in reading over the summer.

Our team of therapists is offering, on a limited basis, the opportunity for children to enroll one of Early Literacy Groups over the summer.

Reading and Writing Groups from Preschool to Middle School

  • Groups led by Denver’s top speech-language pathologists, specializing in the connection between spoken and written language.
  • Children will receive personalized attention as part of a small group, which allows for thoughtful questions, discussion, and peer support.
  • Each session incorporates a structured, systematic, multi-sensory approach to reading.
  • Children will be placed into small groups based on individual skill level.
  • Children can access information through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities.
  • Individual sessions are also available.

Pre-Literacy Group for Preschool Students (ages 4-5)

Pre-reading skills include alphabet knowledge (letter shapes, sound/symbol correspondence), print awareness (book manipulation, understanding that print has meaning), narrative skills (understanding and telling stories), phonological awareness (rhyming, and sound/word play), and vocabulary. In this group, preschool aged children will engage with print to foster enthusiasm about books and stories. Exposure to a wide variety of multi-sensory techniques will help build strong sound/symbol correspondence, and will participate in word play which strengthens overall phonemic awareness.

  • Sessions offered once a week for one hour
  • Children & Parents participation: Direct child instruction on emergent literacy concepts & parent handbook discussing ways to incorporate literacy learning opportunities into the daily routine.
  • A pre and post assessment will be completed for each child and parent to document growth.
  • An individualized report will be given at the end of the 6 weeks
  • Weekly take home activities will be provided (Research has proven more progress will be shown with the implementation of take home activities & concepts from the provided parent handbook)
  • OPTIONAL – Weekly virtual parent session to allow for further explanation of literacy concepts & time for questions
